BC Rail, a BC Government conglomerate now controlling Vancouver Wharves, Canadian Stevedoring and CASCO Terminals, has decided to drastically eliminate ILWU jobs.
Your Vancouver Wharves/B.C.R. Bargaining Committee was summoned to a meeting today (August 30, 1999) with the BCMEA and the Maintenance Manager of Vancouver Wharves.
We were informed that all previous agreements between our Union and Vancouver Wharves were off the table and as far as they were concerned there was no resolution to the problem that they originally created.
They further informed your Committee that, “as operations come on stream, Vancouver Wharves Ltd. Will be assigned such employee(s) as are deemed by Vancouver Wharves Ltd. To be appropriate to the circumstances”.
We as a union cannot allow BC Rail to get away with this.
