ILWU Information List

Ole,

I don't want to take anything away from the urgency and realism of your comments on the position and implications of the current lockout. I'd just like to say, though, that the ILWU came through with flying colours on Liverpool as seen from over here. Take a good look at what happened elsewhere in that dispute. I'm sure that all of us here want you to win this and hope that any lessons learned from examining the Liverpool history - which I am in favour of - can be applied in your own situation fast enough to make a difference. One place to start might be http://www.labournet.net/docks2/9807/reflect.htm. Of course, every dispute is different and there is no magic formula. But I think you are right to concentrate on the dangers of your current situation and the urgency of getting it right quickly. Sultran looks like the thin end of the wedge, and - I'm told - shareholders include Shell and Canadian Pacific. If they get away with this, the US coast is next.

In solidarity,

Greg
